It is in there. There were likely hidden doors involved. I think it was in a chest rather than something fancier.

Do you have the spell Minor Revelation yet? I have only played with a rogue telling me about hidden things early on and in Darkness areas they are all that you can rely on.

When you are facing the door in the dark area and walk into it there will be a screen of options including "use item", choose that from that screen and try your symbols. Just using the general hand "use item" button doesn't work.
